Dr. Nicci Hurcomb on Crowns & Bridges at Tulip Tree Dental Care Read Transcript
We're doing a lot more crowns these days because they used to do a lot of big amalgam fillings back 20, 30 years ago. When I'm seeing all these patients come in with really big amalgams which are those big silver fillings, those silver fillings tend to crack teeth over time. The way that the metal expands and contracts in your mouth with the temperature changes, some people would chew ice which you're not supposed to do but they do it anyway, or from ice-cream and then to drinking coffee, the metal expands and contracts differently than your tooth does. So what it does over time is it puts more micro-fractures or micro-cracks into your tooth. If they're in there for so long, I can actually see them because they start to stain. If you're having those fracture lines and the amalgam is chipping or cracking your tooth, we usually recommend a crown because those fracture lines can go all the way down to the root and the only cure for a cracked tooth if you can save it at all is to put a a crown on the tooth so that it kind of splints the tooth together so that it can't flex anymore. If we splint it on top there, a crown is a really good option for you.

What Is A Dental Crowns?
A dental crown is a restorative dentistry treatment that completely caps the visible portion of a damaged tooth for added protection. Dental crowns can be used to strengthen teeth that have been damaged or weakened by:
- Tooth decay
- A root canal treatment
In addition to restoring the tooth’s structural integrity and allowing you to chew normally again, your dental crown will also cover up any stains and blend in seamlessly with the rest of your smile!
If you have a single tooth that you need replaced, we can also attach a dental crown to a dental implant!
What Is A Dental Bridges?
Dental bridges literally bridge the gaps in your smile left by one tooth or multiple adjacent missing teeth.
Your dental bridge will be made up of three or more crowns that are bonded together. To place the bridge, the end crowns are attached to the teeth that surround your missing tooth or teeth. The middle crown then fills the gap left by your missing tooth.
If you are a suitable candidate and want to preserve your healthy tooth structure, we also offer dental bridges supported by dental implants.
