Root Canals Don’t Have To Be Scary: How Sedation Can Help

Root Canals Don’t Have To Be Scary: How Sedation Can Help | Tulip Tree Dental Care

Hello, South Bend! In this blog post, we will be discussing … root canals! I know, I know — no one wants to talk about root canals. However, we have some important information for you! We are here to tell you that root canals don’t have to be the painful, unpleasant experiences that you imagine them to be. The idea that root canals are terrifying experiences is left over from a time in history where dental work was completed with crude tools and no anesthetic. That time has come and gone.

At Tulip Tree Dental Care, we use modern technology and dental sedation to ensure you are completely comfortable throughout the procedure! We work hard to make sure that your experience is pleasant and stress-free. The point of a root canal procedure is to alleviate pain and eradicate infection — not cause pain and stress. We will do our best to help you OUT of pain and to get you back to your normal life.

The Root Canal Therapy Procedure

Root canals are actually a fairly simple procedure. With today’s technology, they are routine and pretty quick to accomplish. In just one visit to our office, we can remove the infected dental material and seal the tooth against future infection. But what does the actual procedure entail? Let’s talk about it:

First, we will apply a local anesthetic to the area near the infected tooth. This anesthetic will numb the area and prevent any discomfort. Then, we will gently access the interior of the tooth. We will remove all infected dental pulp and the connecting nerves. This will eliminate the ability of your tooth to feel pain.

After the infected material is removed and the cavity is cleaned, we will fill it with a substance called gutta percha. This substance will help keep your tooth strong and healthy. We then seal the tooth against infection in the future and cap it with a crown. The capping process is designed to restore the structural integrity of the tooth.

After your root canal therapy, you should be good as new! You will no longer feel pain, and your oral health will be restored!

Dental Sedation and Comfort Options

If the root canal therapy process still sounds a bit intimidating to you, we do offer some comfort and sedation options to help you feel at ease. You can choose from two different levels of dental sedation: nitrous oxide and oral conscious sedation. Both options will help you feel relaxed, and we will help you choose the best option for you based on your  levels of fear or nervousness.

Nitrous oxide is a gas that is inhaled via a face mask. This option is easy to use and great for patients of all ages. It is designed to create a sense of euphoria. If you need just a little bit of help taking the edge off your nerves, this is the solution for you.

Oral conscious sedation is a pill or tablet that is ingested before your appointment. As compared to nitrous oxide, it creates a fairly heavy sedation. You will feel very relaxed and even groggy. This type of sedation is recommended for patients who are significantly afraid or nervous about the procedure. It does take a while to wear off, so you will need to have a friend or family member drive you to and from our office.

Both forms of sedation are completely safe when used under the supervision of our talented, knowledgeable dental team. We will be happy to help you feel at ease using one of these sedation options. For your comfort, we also offer blankets, pillows, music to listen to, and TV to watch during your visit.
