Having a smile that you’re proud to show is important for many reasons. A beautiful smile bolsters self-confidence, helps you relax in social situations, and may even be important in work settings.
Straight, well-aligned teeth are crucial for a great smile. Not all of us are fortunate enough to be born with perfect teeth. And misaligned teeth can cause problems with chewing and pain as well as causing social embarrassment.
If you’ve considered having your teeth or your child’s straightened, the good news is that there are several treatment options available.
Traditional braces use metal brackets (pads) that are secured to the teeth with adhesive. The brackets are connected with wires. While metal braces do a great job of realigning your teeth, there are some downsides.
One downside is the “mouthful of metal” that you flash when you smile. That’s really uncomfortable for many people. Another downside is that the metal can irritate your gums, tongue, and the insides of your teeth. Metal braces also require fairly frequent dentist visits for tightening and adjustments. And, there are a number of food restrictions.
It’s true that there are more natural-appearing options for metal braces today. For kids who want to make their braces into a fashion statement, there are even brightly colored braces! But the possible irritation, dental appointments, and food restrictions still apply.
We’re proud to offer modern solutions for straightening your teeth, and your child’s. You can both have a beautiful smile without the hassle of braces and in less time than you might think.
Invisalign® Clear Dental Aligners
Rather than metal brackets and wires, Invisalign uses a series of customized, clear plastic aligners. The aligners simply slip comfortably over your teeth, and they’re almost undetectable while you have them on.
You wear your clear aligners for 20 to 22 hours a day for best results. You take them off to eat and to brush and floss. With Invisalign, there are no food restrictions; you eat the foods you love. And, there’s no metal to irritate the inside of your mouth.
After about two weeks, you switch to the next aligner in your customized series. You’ll see Dr. Hurcomb occasionally to check your progress.
Best of all, Invisalign can achieve results in significantly less time than traditional braces. The length of your treatment course will be determined by what you want to accomplish.
Invisalign can treat a number of conditions: misaligned teeth, crowded teeth, gapped teeth, overbite, underbite, crossbite, and open bite (where the teeth don’t meet), among others.
Invisalign treatment relies on you to produce the results you want. If you think you’ll have any issues with wearing the aligners for 20 to 22 hours a day, be sure to discuss them with Dr. Hurcomb. Wearing the aligners for less time will lengthen your course of treatment.
Invisalign is designed to realign permanent (adult) teeth. It’s not approved for use with children. We offer another very effective solution for kids.
