Would you love to have straight, beautiful teeth? Does the thought of living for one, two, or even three years with metal braces make you shudder and say, “Forget it!”?
Invisalign® clear plastic aligners may be what you’re looking for.
Traditional metal braces use metal brackets (pads) that are affixed to your teeth and connected by wires. There are metal braces that are tooth-colored and not as obvious when you smile, but they’re still metal and come with all the disadvantages.
Metal braces can irritate your tongue, gums, lips, and the insides of your cheeks. They pose a challenge in keeping your teeth clean and healthy. And, they come with food restrictions – there is a list of foods to avoid and foods to eat carefully.
Invisalign avoids all of these problems. Invisalign uses a series of clear, medical-grade plastic aligners that are customized to your exact needs. The aligners are practically impossible to see when you’re wearing them, so you can smile with confidence.
Unlike metal braces, Invisalign’s smooth plastic won’t irritate or cut the inside of your mouth. You wear the aligners for 20 to 22 hours each day for best results. But, you take them off to eat and to brush and floss. So, no dietary restrictions and no difficulty keeping your teeth and gums in good shape.
You’ll switch to the next aligner in your customized series about every two weeks. The aligner takes over the job of gently moving your teeth into the desired positions. With Invisalign, it’s possible to get the results you want in as little as 12 months instead of the 2 years or longer that braces usually require.
While you’re using Invisalign, you’ll have periodic appointments with your dentist to check on your progress. Typically, fewer appointments, and quicker ones, are required than is the case with metal braces.
Invisalign is convenient in so many ways.
People usually have questions before deciding on Invisalign to straighten their teeth.
Won’t the aligners pop off my teeth?
Your customized clear aligners are designed to fit snugly over your teeth. You don’t need to worry about them coming loose unexpectedly, even while you’re asleep.
I wear them while I’m sleeping?
Braces work 24/7 to slowly realign your teeth. To get the results you want as quickly as possible, wear your Invisalign aligners 20 to 22 hours a day. Leaving them out when you sleep will significantly delay the process of realigning your teeth.
Is the plastic safe?
Invisalign is made from a certified medical-grade plastic that is perfectly safe to use.
How long does treatment take with Invisalign?
Everyone’s needs are different. There’s no hard-and-fast answer to that question. The average length of treatment is about 12 months. Your dentist can tell you how long it will take to get the results you want.
Can I smoke while I’m wearing Invisalign?
No dentist recommends smoking. Smoking while wearing your aligners can cause the plastic to discolor.
How do I maintain the aligners?
You should rinse them when you take them off to remove saliva that can become a breeding ground for bacteria. You can simply wash them with a mild antibacterial soap and rinse them with water. You can also gently brush your aligners using a non-abrasive toothpaste. Invisalign does make a care kit as well.
What kinds of problems can Invisalign treat?
Invisalign can treat overbite, underbite, crossbite, and open bite (where the teeth don’t meet). It can also correct crooked and misaligned teeth, gapped, malocclusion, and much more.
How do I get started with Invisalign?

You can use our online scheduling application which will collect all the information necessary to provide you with dental care. It also allows you to choose the date and time for your appointment that works well with your schedule.
Dr. Hurcomb will perform an examination and determine whether Invisalign is right for your needs. If Invisalign is the best option, she can advise you on how long your treatment will take. If not, the two of you can discuss other orthodontic approaches to help you get the results you want.
