Don’t Panic! Staying Calm In A Dental Emergency

emergencies_3 South Bend, IN | Tulip Tree Dental Care

It’s hard to stay calm during an emergency sometimes. If you’re having a dental emergency, call us immediately at 574-208-5668 day or night. Dr. Hurcomb can see emergency patients during the day, and you’ll get a special after-hours number to call if we are closed.

Two Dental Emergency Tips To Stay Calm

You know how confusing it can get in an emergency. The less you have to think or find something, the better things tend to go. Instead of trying to remember who to call, add our phone number (574-208-5668) to your phone under “Dentist” or even “Dental Emergency Number”. That way, you won’t have to look anything up.

Dr. Hurcomb will always try to see patients for emergency appointments whenever possible. That usually means the same day that you call. If the emergency happens while our South Bend, IN dental office is closed, call us anyway. You’ll get a special after-hours emergency number to call off our voicemail.

You probably have a first aid kit at home for medical emergencies, so why not have a dental emergency kit on hand? This is pretty simple to create. Get a box or container, then will it with the following:

  • Sterile gauze
  • Non-aspirin pain relievers
  • Plastic gloves
  • Dental cement (available at most drugstores)
  • A tiny, sealable container
  • Our phone number written on a piece of paper (in case your phone dies)

With a dental emergency kit on hand, you’ll have plenty of resources readily available instead of panicking and trying to remember where everything is.

The other way to help stay calm during a dental emergency is knowledge. Knowing what to do for different emergencies can do wonders. Here are some of the most common serious and minor dental emergencies that Dr. Hurcomb sees here at our South Bend, IN dental office.

Tips For Serious Dental Emergencies

You have a cracked or chipped tooth.

If there is any bleeding, apply direct pressure to the wound with sterile gauze. If you cannot stop the bleeding, go to the emergency room immediately for help.

If the bleeding stops, call us at 574-208-5668 for an emergency appointment. Even if you aren’t in pain, there could be damage inside the tooth that you cannot see.

You have a loose tooth.

Leave that tooth alone as best you can. (In other words, don’t give into temptation and test how loose that tooth really is. Any such movement can make it come out.) Stop any bleeding, and then call our South Bend, IN dental office for an emergency appointment.

You lost an adult tooth.

Stop the bleeding if there some, and go to the emergency room if you cannot. Assuming you can, collect the tooth and place it in a small container with just enough water or milk to cover it completely. Call Dr. Hurcomb and bring that tooth to your emergency appointment.

If you cannot find the tooth, then skip to just calling us as soon as possible.

A filling or dental crown came off.

Call our dental office at 574-208-5668 first to schedule an appointment. Then go to your local drugstore and ask for dental cement. This non-toxic adhesive can reapply a dental crown to your tooth.

Dental cement is putty-like and can also serve as a temporary filling. Follow the instructions to keep that tooth protected until Dr. Hurcomb can help.

Tips For Minor Dental Emergencies

You see some blood in the sink after brushing and flossing.

This is almost never an emergency. (It only is if the bleeding continues long after you brushed.) Instead, it’s usually a sign that you have some form of gum disease. Call Tulip Tree Dental Care to make an appointment. Dr. Hurcomb can treat gum disease, and it’s easier to treat when you catch it early.

You have something stuck between your teeth that’s causing pain.

Hold some warm water in your mouth to soften that something up a bit. Then vigorously swish it around your mouth. This often makes it pop out. If not, gently use dental floss and try to dislodge it that way. If you cannot get rid of it, call our South Bend, IN dental office.

Dental emergencies can be scary. The key is to call us immediately at 574-208-5668. If you call after-hours, our voicemail will give you a special number to call for help.
